Elephanta caves

Elephanta Island is situated few miles north east of the Apollo Bunder on the Gateway of India , Mumbai , the Financial capital of India.

Perhaps Mahesh Murti is the most famous sculpture of Elephanta caves.The three faces corrsoond to the three functions of God ( Shiva) , the creation, the protection and the destruction.

Another striking sculpture is “Ravananugraha Murti”.it depicts the story how Shiva humbled the pride of The demon king Ravana.When Ravana made an attempt to uproot the Kailash Paravat, the sacred abode of Lord Shiva, Shiva pressed the mountain down with the toe of his left foot, crushing the arms as well as the pride of Ravana.
